Giving feedback and checking in

The best caregiving relationships aren't the ones with no bumps, they're the ones where people talk. A little honest, kind feedback keeps a good caregiver, and a great one.

Feedback is a gift, not a confrontation

Most caregivers want to do well and appreciate knowing what you need. The goal isn't to catch them out, it's to keep everyone on the same page. Come at it as teammates solving something together, not boss and employee.

How to say it well

The 30-day check-in

Put a friendly check-in on the calendar about a month in. It signals you're thoughtful and gives both of you a natural moment to adjust. A simple structure:

  1. What's going well? (You share, and ask them.)
  2. One or two things to tweak.
  3. What do they need from you to do their best work?

Recognize great work

Good caregivers are hard to find and easy to lose. Say thank you often and specifically. When someone's a keeper, a small raise at a milestone, a bonus at the holidays, or simply treating them with respect and reliability keeps them with your family. Turnover costs far more than appreciation does.

The quiet secret: caregivers stay with families who treat them well, on-time pay, clear expectations, genuine respect, and a little kindness. Being a great employer is a retention strategy.

Start the relationship on the right foot

A clear agreement and a warm first day make feedback easy later. Find a caregiver you'll want to keep.
